The Island economy has evolved before, from subsis

The Island economy has evolved before, from subsistence to commercial whaling, from fishing, farming and maritime trades to tourism. It is about to change again. We can allow it happen in chaos or we can shape it ourselves, in two specific
ways, that can be tied to the concept of renewal:
- local jobs to renew a climate-impacted environment
- year-round hospitality providing respite for visitors

We have the potential to become a model coastal community for economic and climate resilience. This is a unique opportunity to take the challenges of climate change and turn them to our advantage. To do so will take Islandwide and broad-based collaboration that addresses equity considerations head on, a movement the likes of which we have never seen.

The two major economic fallouts on Martha's Vineyard from climate change will likely be the loss of summer visitors due to the effects of extreme weather and the decline of the coastal real estate market.

We need to diversify and move away from a summer economy into one more solidly year-round. This can be done by becoming more economically self-sufficient and marketing our vast visitor-related strengths throughout the year.

Planning for a more diversified, sustainable, and less beach–focused economy
can be accomplished by focusing on blue, green, and creative economies.

Another thematic area of the Climate Action Plan is "Economic Resilience" - but what does that actually mean? As the Island environment changes so too will the local economy. It’s time to acknowledge that our economic winds are shifting.

Consider this statement: “Beaches are already shrinking. Homes are being lost to the sea. Properties are being flooded. More frequent high waves will damage formerly untouched areas. Coastal wetlands may disappear. If the area environment declines, there will be fewer visitors and the economy will suffer the implications from such changes are mind boggling.”

This report was not written about Martha’s Vineyard but it certainly could have been. It is a 2016 report entitled, Understanding Climate Change and Impacts on Tourism in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. (Tourism in this discussion means the entire Vineyard summer resort economy.)

The Martha’s Vineyard Times reported last week on what we all know to be true - that “several mainstream providers of home insurance are pulling coverage for the Island” because they “are finding it more lucrative to abstain from coverage in areas that are at risk of flooding, high winds, or fires, leaving smaller agencies and homeowners to scramble.”

This begs an obvious question - isn’t that the whole purpose of insurance companies - to provide coverage for areas at risk?

Climate change may be a concern somewhere in the back of your mind - flooded roads, beach erosion, hotter summers - but it is an economic issue as well, for everyone of us. When it hits our wallets, there is increased incentive to take action.

Many years ago at a climate change conference a speaker noted that, “When the insurance industry stops insuring houses because of sea level rise, when climate change begins to affect the bottom line, it will be a force of change.”

Here are a couple of ideas to force change:
- We can reduce our greenhouse gas emissions while also saving money - take advantage of Vineyard Power’s free Energy Coach program, www.vineyardpower.com.
- In the bigger picture, cut up your credit cards from banks that heavily finance fossil fuels - the top three are JPMorgan, Citi, and Bank of America.

Have you heard of the value of Biochar?

Biochar is a key to climate change resilience. Through an MV Vision Fellowship with the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, Maggie Craig is investigating the benefits of biochar, which is charcoal made by baking wood in a low-oxygen environment.

Maggie gave a presentation recently at a Vision Fellowship community gathering. At that gathering, Maggie demonstrated the benefits of Biochar, including:

- it enriches the soil and thereby increases farm production
- it makes use of wood waste and thereby reduces risk of wildfire
- it has the potential to reduce nitrogen in our coastal ponds
- it sequesters carbon

Maggie’s single-minded devotion to the values of biochar is bringing it to the forefront of climate resilience strategies. She collects wood, does burn demonstrations, collects data, works with farmers and forest managers, and is working on a water quality pilot project.

Her work highlights the shared mission of the MV Vineyard Fellowship and the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.
