A message from the MV Commission Climate Change Coordinator:

On the day of his inauguration President Trump declared a national energy emergency. We do have an energy emergency, but he has it tragically backwards. His plan is to drill more oil, what he called “liquid gold,” which is the exact opposite of what we need to do to protect life on this earth.

The emergency declaration and executive order signed on Monday aim to expand offshore oil drilling, rollback auto emissions standards, allow drilling in pristine Alaskan sites, suspend certain offshore wind leases, and ease permitting for oil drilling. He plans to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement, even though global temperatures recently passed the threshold set in the agreement.

The greenhouse gasses produced by burning fossil fuels are dangerously warming the earth and putting all life - humans included - at risk. Promoting fossil fuel use is unconscionable and immoral. Let’s not forget that the fossil fuel industry donated some $75 million to Trump’s presidential campaign.

We are in the midst of a climate crisis. I have often wondered why there has been no massive grassroots uprising to protest fossil fuel use. Now it the time. I hope it’s not too late.

Protecting our Floodplains and Wetlands

Protecting the Island's floodplains and wetlands is critical to climate change resilience and public health and safety. Floodplains are so named because they flood in storms. Wetlands absorb floodwater.

As part of The Vineyard Way, the Vineyard Climate Action Plan, the Martha's Vineyard Commission is working with the town Planning Boards, Conservation Commissions and Climate Committees to update the towns’ Floodplain and Wetlands Bylaws.

Keep a lookout this year for public education sessions so you can learn more and provide input on this important project. The goal is to have the bylaw updates on the warrants of the 2026 Annual Town Meetings.

MV Community Seed Library’s Annual Seed Swap

On Sunday, February 2, from 1-3pm, the Martha’s Vineyard Community Seed Library will host their annual Seed Swap at the West Tisbury Library. Bring any open-pollinated/heirloom seed packets or saved seed to swap and share or donate to the seed cabinet. Check-in your seeds, learn about germination testing, talk to gardening pros, and learn about making leaf mold.

This event is presented by Island Grown Initiative, West Tisbury Library, Whippoorwill Farm, and local home gardeners.

No sign up needed to attend. Free and open to the public!

Goal #1: By 2040, for the safety of all residents and visitors, we have an effective countywide emergency preparedness, response, and recovery system in place, including multilingual communication.

Goal #2: By 2040 Island residents understand environmental and climate change impacts to human health and well-being and everyone has access to support that builds self-sufficiency and resilience.

Here's a look at a few Public Health & Safety considerations that were used when creating this section of the Climate Action Plan.

This data, as well as reports from health agencies and the scientific community are foundational to guiding our climate action. Risks such as heat exposure, vector-borne diseases, extreme weather events, pandemics will challenge our health care system and disproportionately affect our most vulnerable populations.

The Island’s climate challenges are immense. New and emerging diseases will appear and extreme weather will affect patient care and supply chains. Our first lines of defense are personal health care and a climate-ready health care system.

Climate change has been identified by health organizations worldwide as a health emergency. The Climate Action Plan identifies Critical Facilities Access, Wildfire Risk, and Physical & Mental Health as the main challenges that climate change places on public health and safety.
