Shape the Future of Getting Around the Vineyard: Join the BPAC

Martha’s Vineyard has something most places can only dream about: 44 miles of shared-use bike paths winding through some of the most beautiful scenery in New England. But keeping that network growing, safe, and connected takes dedicated people at the table. Right now, there’s an opportunity for you to be one of them.

The Martha’s Vineyard Commission is seeking residents to fill openings on the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC), a subcommittee of the Joint Transportation Committee. Terms of two BPAC members expire this April. One of these members has expressed interest in reappointment. The full terms run through April 2029.

The BPAC is comprised of nine members serving staggered three-year terms, and meets from 6:00 to 7:00PM on the second Tuesday of each month via Zoom. Beyond advising the Joint Transportation Committee, the committee actively promotes biking and walking solutions across the island, from infrastructure improvements to public education and safety.

This work matters more than ever in the context of climate change. Every car trip replaced by a bike ride or a walk is a meaningful reduction in carbon emissions. On an island that relies heavily on ferry transportation and where traffic congestion peaks each summer, a robust network of paths and safe pedestrian infrastructure isn’t just a quality-of-life issue. It’s a climate strategy. Encouraging year-round cycling and walking reduces the island’s dependence on fossil fuels, eases pressure on roads, and models the kind of low-carbon living that Martha’s Vineyard’s environmental future depends on.

If you care about sustainable transportation, community health, and the long-term livability of this island, this is your committee. To express interest, contact Dan Doyle at the Martha’s Vineyard Commission by April 1, 2026 with the following information: your name, address, email, and phone number, along with a few sentences explaining why you’d like to serve and your preference for term duration (April 2026 or April 2028).
