Earth Week on the Vineyard: Opportunities for Action!

Every April, communities around the world pause to mark Earth Day, the annual reminder that the planet we share is worth fighting for. The tradition started on April 22, 1970, when 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and campuses to demand cleaner air, cleaner water, and a government that took environmental protection seriously. It worked. The EPA was established that same year. The Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act all followed. Earth Day did not just raise awareness. It changed policy.

More than five decades later, Earth Day has grown into a global moment observed in over 190 countries. And while the scale has expanded, the spirit remains the same: show up, pay attention, and do something.

Here on Martha’s Vineyard, we have always taken that spirit seriously. Island organizations, libraries, schools, and community groups use the week around April 22 to host events, start conversations, and invite people into the work of protecting this place we love. This year is no different, and we have two standout events to share.

34th Annual Earth Day Beach Clean-Up and Conservation Festival

Saturday, April 18 | Morning: 10am to 12pm, Afternoon: 12pm to 3pm

The Vineyard Conservation Society has been gathering islanders for this beloved tradition for 34 years. That kind of consistency is something to celebrate all on its own.

The morning is simple and satisfying. Pick your favorite beach, check in with a host for bags and gloves (or bring your own), and spend a couple of hours making a tangible difference in a place you love. You will also receive a lunch token to use at the afternoon festivities.

Starting at noon, the party moves to the Martha’s Vineyard Museum for a free afternoon of community celebration. More than 20 island organizations will be on hand with live music, games, activities, live animals, and fun for the whole family. It is one of the best gatherings of the island’s conservation community all year, and a wonderful way to meet the people and organizations doing this work every day.

Climate Resilience Symposium at the Aquinnah Library

Thursday, April 23 | 3pm to 5pm | Aquinnah Town Hall

This one is for anyone who wants to go a little deeper. The Aquinnah Public Library is hosting a two-part symposium that brings together some of the sharpest minds working on climate resilience across the island.

From 3 to 4pm, a panel on Climate Resilience and Emergency Planning will tackle a question that feels especially urgent in the wake of the Blizzard of 2026: how do we prepare our community for the weather extremes that are becoming part of island life? Sakiko Isomichi, Climate Resilience Planner with the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, will guide the conversation alongside emergency management officials and community partners who will share practical strategies for staying safe and staying connected when the next major event hits.

From 4 to 5pm, Rich Couse, Program Director at BiodiversityWorks, takes the stage for a presentation called Planting for Climate Resilience. Drawing on the Natural Neighbors program, Rich will show how our own backyards, gardens, and neighborhood green spaces can be designed to support native plants and wildlife while building the kind of ecosystem stability that helps landscapes adapt to shifting seasons, extreme weather, and habitat loss. If you have ever wondered whether your yard can actually do something for the planet, this talk will answer with an enthusiastic yes.

Living The Vineyard Way

Showing up to a beach clean-up, sitting in on a panel discussion, planting a native shrub in your garden: none of these things feel like grand gestures. But together, and multiplied across a community of engaged, informed, and motivated people, they are exactly what the Martha’s Vineyard Climate Action Plan is built on.

The Vineyard Way is not a distant goal. It is something we practice every time we choose to show up for this island. Earth Week is one of the best invitations we get all year to do exactly that.

We will see you out there.
